Living in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge

The Waterloo Region comprises the three major urban centres of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge. The region is a mid-sized community located in the heart of southwestern Ontario's greenbelt. The region has a population of more than 630,000 and is one of the fastest-growing areas in Ontario. Kitchener is the region's largest city. Waterloo is home to two of Canada's highest-ranking universities attracting some of the brightest talent worldwide. Cambridge is known for its desirable lifestyle and high quality of life. 

 

Job Market

Key sectors in the Waterloo Region include advanced manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, food processing, and tech and digital media. Manufacturing is the largest industry, and makes the region the fourth-largest manufacturing centre in Canada. Situated along Ontario's automotive corridor, the Waterloo Region is also part of one of the top automotive jurisdictions in North America. Two universities, the University of Waterloo and Wilfred Laurier, contribute to the region's high-tech growth and innovation. The region is also known as "Canada's Silicon Valley".

 

Housing Market

The Waterloo Region offer is a thriving place to live, work, and study. It offers an affordable and popular alternative to living in a major city like Toronto. As of October 2023, the cost to buy a detached home in the Waterloo Region was $890,591 compared to a detached home in Toronto at $1,718,440. The average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment as of January, 2024 was $2,335/month compared to a 2-bedroom in Toronto at $3,347/month.

According to the 2021 Statistics Canada census, 146,575 immigrants live in the Waterloo Region and the region continues to welcome more newcomers. Immigrant Services at the YMCA of Three Rivers provides helpful resources for newcomers through instruction, mentorship, and training. These programs can help you gain the knowledge and tools to successfully live and feel you belong in Canadian society.
